Family correspondence to Civil War soldier Hez Hulbert from brothers Ed(ward) J. Hulbert and Charles E., and their mother. Letters describe news of family and Grand Rapids (Mich.). Letters are dated Sept. 21, 1861, Jan. 2, 1862, March 13, 1862, Nov. 19, 1862, Dec. 29, 1862, March 10, 1863, and April 11, 1863.

Abel Bingham, born April 5, 1820, served as a missionary among Indians at Tonnawanda, New York (1822-1827) and Sault St. Marie, Michigan (1828-1855), and opened mission schools at each site. Ed Hulbert was in music school in Grand Rapids (Mich.), 1861-1863. Hez may be a nickname or an abbreviation for Hezekiel. There is no Hez Hulbert listed in the Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Index.
